Max Bill (1908-1994), born in Switzerland, died in Berlin, was pupil of Walter Gropius and kindred spirit of Le Corbusier and Mies VanderRohewas. Max Bill designed many of Junghans' classic timepieces including the famous inverted tear-shaped wall clock and kitchen timer (1956) which are now widely collected and still (poorly) imitated by some far-eastern manufacturers. One of these is on the wall in the writer's kitchen, still going strong. Besides designing buildings, Max Bill also designed the small things in life - chairs, posters, lamps, timepieces. He designed them in the spirit of an age he helped to create, and he designed them very well. He was a mover and a shaker; in 1947 he established the "Institute for Progressive Culture" and in 1951 he co-founded the College of Design in Ulm. He designed the school’s buildings, planned its curriculum, and was director of the department of architecture and product design. From 1967-74 he was a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Many consider Max to be one of the fathers of Graphic Design as we know it today. Since his death Junghans has found a way of paying their tribute to this great desgner in part by remanufacturing the range of watches and clocks you find linked to from this page which he designed for them in 1962.
